What is now known as Valley Forge was originally known as Mount Joy Forge. It is in the Great Valley, Chester County, PA. A large portion of the land in the Valley Forge National Park was orignally owned by Llewellyn Davis, later a Lieutenant in the Continental Army. He was also an Original Member of the Pennsylvania Society of the Cincinnati.
Friedrich Wilhelm Augustus, Baron von Steuben, an ex-Prussian officer, taught the Continental Army three very important lessons here: a precise and quick manual of arms, discipline and camp sanitation. He was senior officer present, and therefore the Presiding Chairman when the Cincinnati was organized at Fishkill, NY on May 10, 1783.
Von Steuben was an Orignal Member of the New York Society of the Cincinnati. |
